The Doctrine of Creation — Why Did God Create the World?
Key Scripture:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
How did the world we live in come into existence? Who created the sky, the earth, the oceans, the trees, the animals, and human beings? Why did God create the world in the first place?
The Bible begins answering these questions in its very first verse.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” ().
This verse teaches us an important truth: God existed before the world came into existence. He has no beginning and no end. He is eternal.
The Doctrine of Creation is the biblical teaching about how God created the world, why He created it, and His relationship with everything He has made.
Understanding this doctrine helps us know more about who God is. It also helps us understand who we are, why we exist, and how we should live.
1. God Created Everything Out of Nothing
Scripture: ;
Whenever we make something, we need materials.
For example, to build a house, we need bricks, cement, wood, and other materials. We cannot build a house without using something that already exists.
But God's work of creation was entirely different.
God did not need any preexisting materials to create the universe. He brought everything into existence by His powerful word.
Theologians call this Creation out of Nothing, or Creatio ex nihilo.
teaches that when God spoke, everything came into existence. When He commanded, it stood firm.
In Genesis chapter 1, we read that God carried out His work of creation in six days. He created light, the heavens, the earth, the seas, plants, the sun, moon, and stars, living creatures, and finally human beings.
God did not struggle to create anything. Everything came into existence according to His command.
This teaches us an essential truth:
The world did not come into existence by itself. God is the Creator of everything.
Everything that exists depends on Him, but God Himself depends on nothing.
2. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Were Involved in Creation
Keep reading
Scripture: ; ;
When the Bible speaks about creation, it reveals the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
In , we read that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
tells us that all things were made through the Word. Earlier in the same chapter, John identifies the Word as the One who became flesh—our Lord Jesus Christ.
teaches that all things were created through Christ and for Him.
These passages show us that creation is the work of the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Christians believe in one God who eternally exists in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Here, we learn another important truth.
Jesus Christ is not only the Savior who came to rescue sinners from their sins. He is also the Lord of all creation.
Everything was created through Him, and everything continues to hold together in Him ().
When we think about Jesus Christ, we should remember not only His saving work but also His divine authority over everything that exists.
3. God Created Everything for His Glory
Scripture: ; ;
Why did God create the world?
Did God create the world because He needed something? Was He lonely and therefore decided to create human beings?
No.
God is completely sufficient in Himself. He lacks nothing and depends on no one.
teaches that God does not need anything from human beings. Instead, He is the One who gives life and everything else to all people.
So why did He create the world?
God created everything for His own glory.
His creation reveals His greatness, power, wisdom, and goodness.
tells us that the heavens declare the glory of God.
Think about the stars filling the night sky, the beauty of mountains, the vastness of the oceans, or the remarkable order we see in nature.
These things should remind us of the greatness of the God who created them.
But we must understand something important.
We should not worship the sun, the stars, nature, or anything else that God has made.
Creation is not the object of our worship. Instead, creation points us to the One who deserves our worship.
God alone deserves the glory because He alone is the Creator.
This also teaches us something about our own lives.
We were not created merely to pursue our personal ambitions or desires. We were created to know God, glorify Him, and enjoy fellowship with Him.
4. Everything God Created Was Good
Scripture:
After God completed His work of creation, He looked at everything He had made.
tells us that it was very good.
This means that God's original creation was good. Sin and moral evil were not part of the world as God first created it.
But when we look at the world today, we see suffering, sickness, injustice, conflict, and death.
Why is the world so different from what God originally created?
The Bible answers this question in Genesis chapter 3.
Adam, the first man, disobeyed God's command. Through his disobedience, sin entered the world.
teaches that sin entered the world through one man, and death came through sin.
Because of sin, human life has been deeply affected. Our relationship with God, our relationships with one another, and our experience of life in this world have all been affected by the Fall.
also teaches that creation itself has been subjected to futility and is suffering under the effects of the Fall.
However, we must remember an important truth.
Even after sin entered the world, God did not lose His authority over creation.
He continues to sustain and govern everything He has made.
teaches that Christ upholds all things by His powerful word.
We may not always understand why certain things happen in our lives. We may experience suffering, disappointment, and circumstances beyond our control.
But knowing that God remains sovereign over His creation gives us a reason to trust Him.
The world is not outside His control.
5. God Created Human Beings in His Image
Scripture:
Human beings have a unique place in God's creation.
Why?
Because God created human beings in His own image.
teaches that God created both male and female in His image.
What does this mean?
It does not mean that human beings are gods or that we possess the same unlimited power and knowledge as God.
Rather, being created in God's image means that human beings have a unique dignity, value, and responsibility before Him.
Our value is not determined by our wealth, education, profession, appearance, abilities, or position in society.
Every human being possesses dignity because every human being has been created in the image of God.
This truth should change how we treat other people.
We should not look down on someone because they are poor, less educated, physically weak, or different from us.
We should treat others with dignity and respect, including those with whom we disagree.
This truth is especially important in our families, churches, workplaces, and communities.
God also gave human beings responsibility over His creation.
In , God commanded humanity to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and exercise dominion over it.
also shows that humanity was given the responsibility to work and care for what God had made.
This does not mean we are free to misuse or destroy creation however we please.
The world belongs to God, and we are accountable to Him for how we use what He has entrusted to us.
6. How Should the Doctrine of Creation Affect Our Lives?
So far, we have learned that God created everything, that He created it for His glory, and that He created human beings in His image.
But how should these truths affect our everyday lives?
The Doctrine of Creation is not simply something we study to gain theological knowledge. It should change the way we think and live.
We should live in dependence on God
Our lives, our health, our abilities, and every good thing we enjoy come from God.
We are not completely independent or self-sufficient.
Everything we have is a gift from Him.
Instead of becoming proud of our accomplishments, we should recognize God's goodness and live with gratitude.
This does not mean we should stop working hard or taking responsibility for our lives.
Rather, we should recognize that even our ability to work, think, and accomplish things comes from God.
We should live for God's glory
Because God created us, He has authority over our lives.
We do not have the right to decide for ourselves what is ultimately right and wrong apart from His Word.
God has revealed how we should live through Scripture.
teaches that whether we eat, drink, or do anything else, we should do everything for the glory of God.
This means that glorifying God is not limited to attending church, reading the Bible, or praying.
Our work, family responsibilities, relationships, decisions, and everyday activities should also reflect our desire to honor Him.
We should treat others with dignity and respect
Every human being has been created in God's image.
Therefore, our words and actions toward others should reflect this truth.
How do we speak to our spouse? How do we treat our children? How do we respond when someone disagrees with us?
Do we treat others with patience, kindness, and respect?
The truth that people are made in God's image should influence how we behave in our homes, churches, and communities.
We should trust God in every circumstance
Life is full of changes and uncertainties.
Sometimes we experience fear, anxiety, disappointment, or suffering. We do not know what tomorrow will bring.
But the God who created everything is still ruling over His creation.
Nothing is beyond His knowledge or authority.
This does not mean that believers will never experience difficulties.
It means that even in difficult circumstances, we can trust the wisdom, goodness, and sovereignty of God.
The One who created the world is also the One who continues to sustain it.
7. God Has Not Abandoned His Creation
Scripture: ;
The Bible's teaching about creation begins in Genesis, but it does not end there.
Sin brought corruption, suffering, and death into the world.
Human beings rebelled against God, and our relationship with Him was broken by sin.
But God did not abandon His creation.
In His grace, God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, into the world to save sinners.
Jesus Christ lived a life of perfect obedience, died on the cross for the sins of His people, and rose again from the dead.
Through faith in Christ, sinners are reconciled to God.
teaches that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
This is a wonderful truth.
The God who created the world is also the God who gives new life to sinners through Jesus Christ.
And His work does not stop there.
Revelation chapter 21 tells us about the new heaven and the new earth.
God will bring about the final renewal of His creation. In the new creation, sin, death, mourning, and suffering will be no more.
God will dwell with His redeemed people forever.
This reminds us that God's purposes for His creation will not fail.
The God who began the work of creation will also accomplish His purposes through Jesus Christ.
Conclusion
The Doctrine of Creation teaches us three important truths.
God is the Creator of everything. Everything that exists came into existence through His power.
God is the Lord over everything. All creation remains under His authority and care.
God created everything for His glory. Therefore, we should live to honor and glorify Him.
When we understand these truths, our perspective on life should change.
Our lives do not belong to us independently of God. We belong to the One who created us.
Therefore, we are responsible to know Him, worship Him, and live in obedience to His Word.
And although sin has affected every part of human life, the Creator has graciously provided salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.
In Him, we find forgiveness, true hope, and the promise of everlasting life.
The Doctrine of Creation ultimately reminds us that our lives have meaning because we were created by God and for His glory.
