Thinking Biblically About Anxiety
Jesus does not shame the anxious. He invites them to look at the birds, the flowers, and their Father.
Anxiety is one of the most common struggles in our churches. Jesus addressed it directly in the Sermon on the Mount.
"Behold the fowls of the air"
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? — Matthew 6:26 (KJV)
Jesus' argument moves from the lesser to the greater. If God cares for birds, how much more for his children?
Three biblical responses
- Remember who God is. Anxiety often forgets the Father.
- Pray specifically. Philippians 4:6 invites us to bring "every thing" to God.
- Live one day at a time. "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."
Anxiety may also have physical causes that deserve care — biblical thinking welcomes that. But the anxious heart always needs the Father's care.
